Muddy Feet introduces innovative ways of working with mental health needs in the outdoors. These courses are designed for anyone working with people who have mental health, special and learning needs.

Muddy Feet have drawn upon years of experience of working with disengaged learners, those with special needs, and working with children and young people with adverse childhood experiences. We use current research and best practice to bring you these engaging outdoor courses.

Working with children and young people with additional needs Taster Sessions

 This one day course is designed to introduce mental health issues in children and young people , positive approaches to managing behaviour and how to effectively engage these learners outdoors. Useful for those who are working with Autism, Attachment, ACE's, ADHD and Sensory Processing issues 

This course covers

  • Introduction to mental health issues 
  • How to use effective communication to engage learners
  • The benefits of using the outdoors for engagement 
  • Positive approaches to challenging behaviour. 
  • Experience of practical activities
  • Reflection of learning
  • Advice on next steps
  • Action planning

Level 2  Award in Learning support for children and young people that have additional learning needs (QCF)

This exciting and innovative 2 day course is designed for those who are experienced in outdoor practical skills but wish to be able to apply these skills effectively with groups of young people who have experienced adverse childhood experiences, trauma, mental health issues, behavioural needs or conditions such as ADHD, Sensory Processing, Autism, or Attachment disorders. This course looks at mental health issues and the causes of challenging behaviour and how to  effectively engage with these children or young people.  Through attending this course you will work through a practical toolkit of activities designed to help you work with these groups outdoors.  You will also cover health and safety and safeguarding. 

This course is ideal for Forest School Leaders, Bush craft and Outdoor Activity Leaders, Scout and Brownies, Youth and Community workers, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, PRU, Learning Support Assistants, SENCO's, Health professionals.

This course is 10 Credits and covers these units;

  • Supporting the learning of children and young people who have mental health issues or disorders
  • Positive approaches to understanding and reducing behaviours that challenge
  • Supporting learning in an educational environment
  • Communicating with children and young people who have Additional Learning Needs to enhance their learning
  • Health and safety requirements
  • Safeguarding and Child protection requirements

Entry requirements

  • 18 + years old
  • Level 1 Qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working with the client group or outdoors
  •  

Level 3 Award in Learning Support for Children and Young People that have Additional Learning Needs (QCF)

This  innovative 4 day course is designed for those who are managing programmes for children and young people with mental health issues and challenging behaviour. This course introduces mental health issues, strategies for engaging children and young people with mental health issues. Positive approaches to challenging behaviour 

This course is ideal for anyone in a management or champion role who is looking at ways to engage young people and children with mental health issues effectively.

This is an OCN L3 (QCF) qualification accredited by Agored Cymru.  This course is assessed through portfolio. This course normally takes 9 - 12 months to complete.

This course is 15 Credits and covers these units;

  • Supporting the learning of children and young people who have mental health issues or disorders
  • Positive approaches to understanding and reducing behaviours that challenge
  • Supporting learning in an educational environment
  • Communicating with children and young people who have Additional Learning Needs to enhance their learning
  • Health and safety requirements
  • Safeguarding and Child protection requirements
